The Alliance for a safer nightlife

The Alliance for a safer nightlife is an organization dedicated to creating a safer and more secure nightlife environment in Copenhagen. Our group has developed the concept ‘Safer Persons’ along with an accompanying explainer. The concept is specifically aimed at nightlife personnel, including bartenders, bouncers, and cloakroom attendants. Through an online platform, individuals can participate in a free course on creating safer spaces. As a reward, each individual staff member receives a wristband signaling their commitment to creating a safer nightlife environment for guests and colleagues.

The challenge faced by the Alliance for a Safer Nightlife is complex. In Copenhagen’s nightlife, there’s a widespread issue with boundary-crossing behavior and discrimination, which isn’t always adequately addressed by the staff. Reports have shown that up to 41% of nightlife users don’t experience positive action being taken by the staff when they encounter such situations. Lack of knowledge and awareness about safer space policies, along with a general lack of trust that guests’ concerns will be taken seriously, are central challenges.

Our solution integrated trends from popular culture and addressed deeper cultural challenges in the party scene in Copenhagen, while also directly addressing the identified issues.

The project was developed in collaboration with Mikkel Weikop, Jan Aas, Yasmin Demir, and Alice Fjordside.
